The La Lope Reserve is the largest game reserve in Gabon, encompassing some 5,000 square km. The camp consists of air-conditioned bungalows with shower facilities, and a restaurant serves excellent food. The reserve which offers a good chance of seeing rare forest elephants and many other endangered species, can be reached by a 5-hour train ride or by car. Another interesting weekend trip can be made to the Nyonie Camp. The camp is located 70 km south of Libreville, and is reached via a 90-minute motorboat ride from Libreville. Two popular game parks are located in Burkina Faso. Theyare the Nazinga Game Reserve to the South of Ouagadougou and the Arly Game Reserve in thesoutheast corner of Burkina. Nazinga, a 3 1/2-hour drive, is a great weekend or overnighttrip from Ouagadougou. Nazinga offers simple bungalows for sleeping or you can bring atent and camp. Animals such as antelope, baboons, wart hogs, waterbuck, and elephants aremore apt to be seen during the dry season. Guides are required. Arly, open from Decemberto April, is filled with elephants, hippos, baboons, red monkeys, boars, antelope, lions,and buffalo.
