US Department Of State Post Report

Currently, there are several newspapers in Haiti, including two French-language dailies in Port-au-Prince. One of these dailies has occasional articles in English. Radio, TV, and newspapers draw on Agence France Presse, Reuters, and AP for international news. ...

U.S. newspapers, particularly the Miami Herald, are available but not always on a daily basis. Magazines such as Time, Newsweek, L'Express, and Le Figaro are available about a week after publication. ... [Read More]

Department of State, International Information Programs, U.S. Foreign Policy Agenda, March 2000 - "The Making of U.S. Foreign Policy"

"Global real-time television, the Internet, and other recent technological advances have clearly affected how top foreign policy-makers do their job, says Warren P. Strobel, a senior editor at U.S. News & World Report, and author of Late-Breaking Foreign Policy: The News Media's Influence on Peace Operations. Foreign policy "isn't made by the media," he says, but "in the Information Age, it can't be made without it." ... [Read More]

Daily Briefing for March 5 -- Transcript

MR. ERELI: I don't have any comment on individual candidates, frankly. What we have made clear, and I think what the Secretary made a very eloquent statement on in his op-ed in Izvestiya several weeks ago, was that a strong and healthy democracy is something that is in all of our interests and that we'd look to Russia to guarantee -- provide the kind of guarantees for open and transparent elections that allow people to participate, allow people to campaign, allow people to get their message out and give the voters a true and accurate picture of the full range of choices that are before them, and that it's -- that such a process can only produce good results. ... Daily Press Briefing for Feb. 23 -- Transcript

Remember, the IAEA asked for a correct, complete and final picture of Iran's past and present program. So they have, indeed, indulged in -- they have talked about some -- divulged some parts of that program. But they still have a long way to go, and we -- it's not clear to us at this point that Iran has made a strategic decision to abandon its efforts at nuclear weapons production. ...

QUESTION: There are some reports -- I know you said you don't want to get ahead of news reports, but can you confirm that the Embassy is closed? And that also, I know you ordered the departure of the non-essential diplomats, but apparently there was still a significant number of diplomats in the country. So how does the security situation affect them being able to do their jobs, or are you having them stay at home for the time being? ... [Read More]

USIA Electronic Journals 11/96 - Fauci

Q: What would you say is the good news and the bad news about AIDS? Have we turned the corner on this deadly epidemic? ...

However, when you look at the global picture , particularly developing countries, you need a vaccine to put the disease under the kinds of control that we now have with smallpox and polio. ...

Also, the bad news is that we may start to be getting a little complacent, and not appreciating that the demography of the epidemic -- particularly in the United States -- is changing a bit. It's becoming more of a disease that involves heterosexual women, and the children of infected mothers. ... [Read More]

USIA, U.S. Foreign Policy Agenda, April 1998 -- Schear onDOD and Peacekeeping

That's the good news. The bad news is that peace operations arenot without dangerous or unwanted consequences. Just as they cando things for us, we have to be careful about what they might doto us. If not properly conceived and executed, such operationscan be a slippery slope to long-term commitments in unstableareas. What is more, they can at times sap the willingness ofparties to assume ownership of their problems; and they canexpose our forces to unwanted risks, draw heavily on resources, and have detrimental impact on war-fighting readiness. None ofthese problems are show-stoppers but they suggest the need toproceed cautiously and selectively. ... [Read More]

MR. BOUCHER: No, I don't have. I didn't see the news. I'll see if there's anything to say on it. ...

MR. BOUCHER: I think the picture is probably mixed. Overall, I haven't seen it raised as a vital -- a sort of key issue right now. I'm sure there's still some areas where people who have pledged need to do better in terms of delivery. ... [Read More]

Department of State Washington File: Text: Mixed Picture Emerges on Global Human Rights Practices

But there are some hopeful signs in the overall picture for human rights. Early this year, the Chinese government took steps to provide relief to those still serving sentences for political activities that have been removed from China's Criminal Code. For many years, China apparently interpreted its law to provide few if any opportunities for sentence reduction or parole to such security prisoners. In a significant systemic shift, China now is committed to applying the same criteria for sentence reduction and parole to such prisoners as apply to common criminals. In early February, China granted sentence reduction or parole for a total of 58 individuals, including Tibetans and Uighurs who had been jailed for these so-called security crimes, and other cases are under review. According to the Tibet Information Network, two Tibetan nuns---one of them still a teenager when she was jailed-were released in July 2004. Many more prisoners of conscience remain in detention and we will con ... [Read More]

Daily Press Briefing for Jan. 14 -- Transcript

MR. BOUCHER: Part of this process of discussion that we have had with Libya and that we will have with Libya over questions of verification of their programs and elimination of their programs, is certainly disclosure of information and transparency in what they have done and how it needs to be eliminated or resolved. So that's always been part of the picture. ...

MR. BOUCHER: Sorry, that's new news to me. I'd have to check on it and see. ... [Read More]
