U.S. Department of State Supports Smithsonian Folklife Festival

The Bureau of Public Affairs' Office of Broadcast Services is producing a mini-documentary on the Silk Road for placement overseas. The program will focus on American visitors experiencing the cultural and historical influences of the Silk Road region against the background of the U.S. Capitol. The Office of Broadcast Services also will assist foreign television correspondents in the production of reports and feature stories on the Silk Road by making available footage, camera crews, and technical resources. ... “Future Leaders” Focus on Civic Education, Celebrate 10th Anniversary of FLEX Program in Washington, DC

The 126 students who are in Washington for the Civic Education workshop represent nearly 1,400 current FLEX students who are living with host families throughout the United States and attending American high schools this year. The workshop is designed to provide them with an understanding and appreciation of democratic fundamentals such as civic responsibility, citizen empowerment, volunteerism, and community action, and to expose them to various examples of leadership at the federal level. The sixth year of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Undergraduate Development Program (BUDP) ended successfully with a workshop held on July 10-13th in Washington DC. The program started off with the tour of the Diplomatic Reception Rooms at the State Department, followed by meetings with Thomas Adams, Acting Coordinator of U.S. Assistance to Europe and Eurasia; Raffi Gregorian, Deputy Director for Bosnia at the office of South Central European Affairs; and Zoran Perkovic, Minister Counselor at the Bosnian Embassy. While in Washington, the students also had the opportunity to tour the Capitol, attend a U.S. Marine Band Jazz Orchestra performance at the Kennedy Center, and take a boat cruise on the Potomac.
