The United States Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria: Paper presented by Dr Lydia Umar, Executive Director, Gender Action Team (GAT), Kaduna During the Round-Table Discussion on "Women's Leadership and Political Empowerment" as part of the 2003 Women's History Month Celebrations. March 18, 2003 At Lagos, Nigeria I wish to suggest 2 solutions if women are to be empowered for political leadership.Structures and processes need to be put in place by all to pull down the obstacles that stand against women empowerment. For example, dealing with gender issues beginning from the homes to the communities, school and society at large. Women's rights, special needs and concerns need to be recognized, appreciated and promoted by all through education, sensitization, public enlightenment and advocacy.The need to mobilize all women from the grassroots to the urban elite's to form a women's movement with a purpose. Non-government organizations who see womanhood rather that their tribes or religion as their constituency can initiate and offer leadership for the formation of such a mass movement. US Department Of State Post Report Lome is a 2-hour drive to the west. Shopping and fine restaurants are popular attractions. Lagos, a large bustling city, is to the east. It has bookstores, with a large English-language selection, an interesting museum of Yoruba and other tribal art, and a busy social life within the large diplomatic and foreign communities. Other points in Nigeria within weekend reach of Cotonou are Ibadan, Nigeria’s second most populous city, and Ife, which has a museum displaying many excellent 15th- and 16th-century bronze, terra cotta busts, and effigies.
