Remarks at the Swearing in - US Embassy Doha Qatar At the same time, we recognize the positive impact that satellite media are having, by allowing the concept of public argumentation to set roots in Middle Eastern intellectual and political culture. We firmly support free speech and a free press as inalienable democratic rights. But news agencies and the media must practice journalism ethically. “Protection of Religious Freedom is a Fundamental American Value” - US Embassy Doha Qatar The allegations are contrary to our respect for cultural customs and the fundamental belief in the freedom of religion that we practice at Guantanamo Bay with regard to prisoners of the Muslim religion. Personnel that we assign Guantanamo Bay go through cultural training to ensure that they understand the procedures for protecting the rights and dignity of detainees. The detainees, when they are in custody, receive adequate shelter, clothing and meals appropriate to their culture and religious beliefs. There is an opportunity to worship. Detainees are given copies of the Koran and prayer beads. They have reading materials. They also receive medical care. The call to Prayer is played over camp loud speakers at the appropriate times every day and detainees have stenciled arrows pointing in the direction of Mecca so that people are afforded the opportunity to pray as they wish. ... But the development of the cultured pearl by the Japanese in the 1930s almost destroyed this trade, which had flourished since Babylonian times. ... [Read More]
The Role of Information and Communications Technologies and Promoting Qatar-U.S. Dialogue Our engagement is shaped by well-defined principles. The most important of these is that reform and modernization have to be homegrown, and their achievements home-owned. Reform and modernization cant be imposed or sustained from outside. The help that can be offered must be tailored wisely to the conditions of each society, with full respect for its culture and history. The U.S. recognizes that freedom, by its nature, must be chosen and defended by citizens, and sustained by the rule of law and the protection of minorities, including religious minorities. President Bush recognized that when the soul of a nation finally speaks, the institutions that arise may reflect customs and traditions very different from our own, and emphasized that America will not impose our own style of government on the unwilling. Our goal, instead, is to help others find their own voice, attain their own freedom and make their own way. The future of a country rooted in freedom and loyal to the principles ... [Read More]
