ECA: Reaching Younger, Wider, Deeper

Vibe magazine (February 2003) published "The Killing Fields," a photographic essay by 2002 Fulbright student Vanessa Vick, to reflect the faces of AIDS in Uganda. While in Uganda on her Fulbright grant, Vick established relationships with individual families in order to document through photographs and personal interviews the impact of the AIDS epidemic on Ugandan culture and society. She returned from Uganda in December 2002 and is beginning to publish her work. Vick's personal passion as a photojournalist and a documentary photographer is to continue covering the AIDS epidemic in East Africa and its effects on the people. "It is my hope that by telling the stories of individuals through images and their own words that positive change will occur," said Vick. ... [Read More]

Weather in Nairobi and South Africa is much cooler than in Kampala, especially during the winter when it can get quite cold.  Most Embassy staff make a few trips to Nairobi or South Africa, so bring warm clothing if you are planning a side trip during that season. MenLast Updated:  2/26/2004 6:30 AM Men usually wear suits and ties to work and to semi-formal occasions.  Most evening activities require only smart casual dress.  A light jacket is suitable for evening wear.  Bring comfortable natural fiber clothing for general wear. WomenLast Updated:  2/26/2004 6:31 AM  [Read More]

Announcement of Programs to Support Uganda's Fight Against HIV/AIDS

The reason we put Uganda on the schedule is because we're aware of the progress that you have made and we saw more of it in the presentation. The progress began with your President understanding the nature of the crisis he was facing and not shrinking from it, not standing back, not saying it's not here, it can't be in my country, not my culture, [inaudible]. ...

I knew a lot about this academically before I came. I'd read a great deal and I'd studied a great deal and I'd heard all the stories about there being a pandemic, a crisis, and how it was destroying families, how it was destroying cultures, but you really don't get a full appreciation of it until you see the people. Until you see the people who are stricken, until you see the little girl who has the disease -- until you see the kind of trouble that people have to go through every day to make ends meet, to still make the family work, to still find the daily bread to survive, you don't know the true appreciation of that until you've seen it on the ground, and it really helps me and the members of my party understand so much better. ... Remarks with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni

I think each country has to find its right pace and adopt democracy in accordance with its own culture. I think that Uganda is moving in the right direction, and I hope that as it moves into the future, it will find more and more opportunities to allow free and open political discourse and debate, in order to become a maturing democracy, and a mature democracy in due course. But I must say, I am impressed by what the President has been able to do since he took over the leadership of this country in 1986. Great progress has been made and when you consider where the country was in 1986, the actions he has taken have certainly benefited the people of Uganda, and I think he has a clear idea of where he wants to take his country in the future. ... The United States of America And UNESCO: Building Knowledge, Bridging Cultures

"It is America's honor and gift to be a nation of nations, whose people and aspirations touch every nation on the face of the earth. From universal dreams of freedom, equality and prosperity, we became a country that melded many different cultures, ideas, perspectives, and talents — giving us a rich diversity that continues to make us strong today. With this strength comes great responsibility and a desire to engage with the international community. And words are not enough. Americans are committed to turning these visions into action."Colin L. Program Information – Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation

The Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation is the only cultural preservation program in the U.S. government that provides direct small grant support to heritage preservation in less developed countries. In creating the fund, Congress noted, "in efforts to assist in preserving the heritage of other cultures, we show our respect for them." ...

Congress specified that Ambassadors from eligible countries (see list below) may submit proposals for consideration. Projects are brought to the attention of the U.S. Ambassadors in different ways. Often the project is a partnership between the U.S. Embassy and the country's Ministry of Culture or local non-profit organization. It is the Embassy's Public Affairs Section that oversees the project. Organizations wishing to suggest projects for consideration may contact the Public Affairs Officer at the American Embassy in the eligible countries. ... [Read More]
