Maryland Pelagic Tagging Information
T he Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Fisheries Service and NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service are cooperating to improve records of recreational bluefin tuna and billfish landed in Maryland. The MD DNR recreational catch reporting and tagging program for bluefin tuna has been expanded to include billfish (white marlin, blue marlin, sailfish) and swordfish caught off Ocean City that are brought into a dock, launching ramp or marina in Ocean City, Maryland. This system will help scientists gain information on the size and number of these species landed in Maryland. When any of these species are landed recreationally, a landing card MUST be filled out and a tag will be issued to be attached to the tail of the fish prior to its removal from the dock, launching ramp or marina area. Both landing cards and tags will be available at the following locations: ... [Read More]

The National Ocean Service (NOS) operates six long-term continuously operating tide stations in the state of Maryland which provide data and information on tidal datums and relative sea level trends, and are capable of producing real-time data for storm surge warning. These stations are located at Ocean City Inlet, Cambridge, Tolchester, Baltimore, Annapolis and Solomons Island. Coastal & Estuarine Geology: The Need for Sand In Ocean City, MD (Introduction)
Maryland's Atlantic coast is a popular year-round recreational destination. Maryland's barrier island beaches, found on Fenwick and Assateague Islands, are readily accessible to more than 30 million people. Ocean City, the state's only coastal resort, hosted over eight million visitors in 1996. Of the 40 miles of beaches in Maryland, only about 10 miles are maintained by the state. Ocean City public beaches occupy the entire length 8 miles of Fenwick Island within Maryland. The remaining 2 miles of state-managed beaches are confined to Assateague State Park. The rest of Assateague Island falls under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service. ... [Read More]

Coastal & Estuarine Geology: The Need for Sand in Ocean City, MD (Page 4)
Currently utilized resources are located north of Ocean City Inlet, within the three-mile limit of state jurisdiction. These sands are committed to the reconstruction and periodic nourishment of Ocean City beaches. Demand for offshore sands is increasing as more shore communities opt for shoreline replenishment. An increase in the frequency of strong storms has accelerated erosion of the restored beaches. These factors place increasing demands on the sand resources within state waters. It is conceivable that sand resources within state waters could be depleted after the scheduled 2010 nourishment cycle. From the period 2014 to 2044 at least 7.6 million cubic meters of sand will be required to maintain Ocean City beaches. New sand sources are needed outside state waters to meet increased demand. Access to sand resources in Federal waters would encourage the continuation of shoreline restoration projects. ... [Read More]

Maryland Geological Survey: Assateague Island, Worcester County, MD
The eastward-curving hook of sand in the center of the photo is the northern tip of Assateague, which ends at the Ocean City Inlet. North of this point, the southern end of Fenwick Island and Ocean City can be seen through the haze. Notice how the tip of Assateague is greatly offset to the west of Fenwick Island. The stabilization of Ocean City Inlet in the 1930's has starved northern Assateague beaches of sand, accelerating the westward migration of the island. ...

Assateague Island is a barrier island on Maryland's Atlantic coast. This is a view of northern Assateague Island, looking north toward Ocean City, Maryland. The gray roads and parking lots are part of Maryland's popular Assateague State Park . The island forms a barrier between the Atlantic Ocean and Worcester County. In terms of geologic time, barrier islands are ephemeral features; dynamic testaments to the inexorable rise of the ocean. Sea levels along the Atlantic coast have been rising for thousands of years and will continue to rise until the beginning of a new ice age. As the ocean rises these islands are pushed westward toward the mainland by waves and currents. ... [Read More]
