US Department Of State Post Report The Cayos Cochinos, or Hog Islands, are a group of small, privately-owned islands and cays 10 miles off the north coast near La Ceiba. Indigenous tribes once inhabited them, but the islands took their name from the conquistador Cortés, who tried to farm there. There is good snorkeling and diving around these islands, some of which have black coral reefs. Boats to the islands can be hired from Nueva Armenia, 25 miles east of La Ceiba. ... The Bay Islands range from 20 to 40 miles off the north coast. The largest three are Roatán, Guanaja, and Utila, all available by single engine plane via La Ceiba. The scuba diving, snorkeling, and fishing in these islands are excellent. ... [Read More]
Communities Around the Globe Protect the Underwater World, by Brian Huse, Global Issues, April 2004 In Bali, Indonesia, the scuba diving industry is large and varied, with limited communication between businesses. The dive operators recognized the need to work together to address threats to local reefs from anchor damage, destructive fishing, land- and marine-based pollution, and sedimentation from coastal erosion. The dive operators met in January this year and decided to use Dive In To Earth Day as motivation to take action. They formed a “Dive In Bali” committee, and plans are now underway to install a series of mooring buoys at various dive sites on the island to prevent anchors from damaging fragile corals. The committee is also preparing to hold a community awareness festival, underwater reef cleanup, and slide show at a village elementary school. ... [Read More]
US Department Of State Post Report Seaward, the view is interesting. Four or five scenic cayes with good fishing, swimming, and skin-diving, lie within a 30-minute boat ride. The island villages of San Pedro and Caye Caulker are the favorite jumping-off spots where skin-diving and scuba equipment can be rented. ... Closer to home is Ambergris Caye, a large sandy island, only 15 minutes by plane or 1½ hours by boat from Belize City. A fishing village turned tourist hub, San Pedro, is the premier jumping off spot for the best fishing, diving, and boating. Many other lovely cayes are minutes from Belize City by boat, a couple with cabana guestrooms. Placencia, a rustic, mainland fishing village about 30 minutes by air or three hours by car, is one of several popular beachfront village vacation spots in the south. Belize Visitors should exercise caution and good judgment when visiting Belize. Crime can be a serious problem (see Crime), particularly in Belize City and remote areas. Road accidents are common (see Traffic Safety and Road Conditions.) Public buses and taxis are frequently in poor condition and lack safety equipment. Boats serving the public, especially water taxis, often do not carry sufficient safety equipment, may carry an excess number of passengers and may sail in inclement weather. Rental diving equipment may not always be properly maintained or inspected, and some local dive masters fail to consider the skill levels of individual tourists when organizing dives to some of Belize’s more challenging sites. ... Visitor Information The cayes (pronounced keys), the offshore atolls, and the barrier reef are the main attraction to Belize. The barrier reef, which is 185 miles long, is the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere. The cayes are islands and/or mangroves, that are located between the mainland and the barrier reef, on the barrier reef, and on or within the barrier reef perimeters of the offshore atolls. Although the mangrove cayes are normally uninhabitable by humans, they do provide a superior habitat for birds and marine life. Many birds, fish, shellfish, and marine organisms begin their lives within the protection of the mangrove. On the other hand, the island cayes, which are distinguishable by their palm trees, have provided the foundation for the development of many fine resorts to serve water sports enthusiasts and marine naturalists. The cayes and atolls are excellent for SCUBA diving, sn ... [Read More]
